Section 1 General

101. Application

1. The construction and equipment of ship intended to be registered and classed as the ship built strengthened for navigation in ice are to be in accordance with the requirements in this Chapter in addition to the Rules for the Classification of Steel Ships.

2. The machinery installations of ship intended to be registered and classed as the ship built strength- ened for navigation in ice are to comply with the requirements in this Chapter in addition to the relevant requirements in Pt 5 of the Rules for the Classification of Steel Ships.

3. In principle, the requirements in this chapter are applied to the ice strengthening of ships which are intended to navigate in the Northern Baltic that are subject to the Finnish-Swedish Arc class Rules 2010 or in the Canadian Arctic that are subject to the Arctic Shipping Pollution Prevention Regulations(see Annex 1, 101).

4. The low air temperature of the ship's ambience in the navigational waters is to be considered for fittings of structures and equipment that are important for navigation and the safety of the ship which is subject to the requirements of this Chapter. In particular, special consideration should be given towards the functioning of hydraulic systems, hazards of freezing of water pipings and tanks and starting of emergency diesel engines, etc.

5. In ships that have unusual proportions, hull form or propulsion arrangements, etc, the Society may impose special requirements.

102. Documentation

1. Forward region, midship region, aft region, ice belt, UIWL and LIWL defined in 202. are to be specified in the Shell Expansion.

2. The engine output defined in 301, the displacement defined in 203. 3 and the dimensions neces- sary for the engine output calculation required in 302. are to be specified in the General Arrangement.
